William Hutson (1720-1761)

If you’ve been following my posts as they’ve come out, William Hutson is a distant marital relative of Alexander Peronneau Jr.. His daughter, Mary, married Arthur Peronneau. Arthur was Alexander Jr.’s paternal cousin; his father Henry & Alexander Sr. were brothers.

August 14, 1720

William Hutson was born in England to parents Thomas and Esther.

November 6, 1731*

Mary Woodward (William’s first wife) is married to Isaac Chardon in South Carolina.

*This date comes from South Carolina’s Compiled Marriage Index. Another source, US and International Marriage Records has them being married in 1735.

1736

Isaac Chardon passes away after what appears to be a long illness; his will states, “being weak in body but of a sound and disposing mind and memory.” Also in his will he refers to Mary as “my beloved wife.”

They appear to have had one daughter, Sarah. His will refers to his “Child,” that remains unnamed throughout. One family tree has Sarah being born in 1736, so he may have written his will while Mary was pregnant. However, not much else comes up for Sarah outside of the one family tree; when I search for her on ancestry, it tries to link to William and Mary’s daughter, Esther. Sarah may have died at a young age or unfortunately could have faded to the background in her mother’s new marriage and the addition of half-siblings.

1741

William’s mother passes away at age 41.

1743

William marries Mary Chardon in Charleston, SC. There is no record that I could find of when and why he came to South Carolina.

This portrait of Mary was uploaded to ancestry and find a grave.

October 25, 1744

Mary Prioleau (William’s second wife)* marries her first husband Hugh Bryan in South Carolina; she was his fourth wife.

*To keep from getting confused, I’m going to refer to his wives as Mary C. and Mary B.

December 31, 1753

Hugh Bryan passes away; he and Mary B. do not appear to have had children.

From his find a grave page I cannot tell if this is a eulogy or an obituary, but this was written/said by William:

“South Carolina, May 21, 1755…Mr Hugh Bryan, a gentleman of character in civil life,
having been honoured with commissions both in the magistracy and militia, of this province. He was born in the year 1699, and died the last day of December, 1753. ‘Tis a circumstance I recollect with pleasure, that he was my particular friend, one with whom I have taken sweet counsel, and indeed one of the deacons of our church… He was always a friend and a credit to religion…Mr Bryan…continued steadfast in faith, joyful through hope, and a pattern of humility, piety and patience, through the whole of his Christian course, till the happy time came when he exchanged this life for a better…I heard of his illness just after my arrival in Charlestown, and got home time enough to see him die in peace, and commit his remains to the dust in hope of a joyful resurrection to eternal life. But, ah! sir, to part with such friends is very affecting, though I think I never was so sensible of my loss in Mr Bryan, as since I have been looking over his journal. I think I never before so well knew the value of my friend, and ah ! how it shames me to find how far he had got above me…
I am, sir,
Your much obliged friend
And servant, for Jesus sake,
[Rev] William Hutson.”
