Margaret Grider (1833-1859)

I initially researched and posted about Margaret Grider back in 2023. I was super upset when I first saw her grave because it simply said “Wife of JH Grider” instead of having her own name.

I found some about her, but I was able to find out so much more recently.

Anything that I include in italics are just my thoughts, they are in no way verified, they are purely conjecture.

January 7, 1805

Margaret’s father, James Davis Hines, is born in Campbell County, Virginia to parents John & Sally.

Interesting fact: His grandfather, Henry Hines, was a Revolutionary War veteran. He served as a private in 1778 under Captain Tarleton Payne in the First Virginia Regiment.

This is Margaret’s great-grandson’s application to the Sons of the American Revolution. This looks like he may have served in the MD Militia, but other family sources say Virginia.

Margaret is born Margaret Elizabeth Hines. Her name is an inverse of her mother’s, Elizabeth Margaret.

She had four older sisters: Sarah Ann (1826), Martha Ann (1827), Mary Fletcher (1829), & Julia Almira (1831).

Her place of birth isn’t confirmed anywhere, but it seems safe to assume she was born in Bowling Green.

Her father, James, passes away at age 41.

September 24, 1846

Margaret marries John Hobson Grider in Warren County, KY.

Here is their marriage license.

Also in 1851, John had a house built for her.

This is a photo from the National Register of Historic Places when it was added to the list in 1978.
The home is still standing today.
Here is a description of the house and its history from the National Register of Historic Places. She seems to have gone by her middle name as a lot of sources refer to her as Elizabeth.

December 26, 1851

Her sister Martha Ann passes away at age 24.

May 16, 1852

Her sister Sarah Ann passes away at age 26. She had been married since 1844 to Virgil Porter.

August 22, 1853

Margaret and John’s unnamed son passes away.

His cause of death is listed at the top as being spasms.

Margaret gives birth to a son, James Martin. He appears to be named after his maternal grandfather and then has his paternal grandfather as his middle name.

October 27, 1859

Her brother John Fletcher passes away at age 24.

Family records have this as being his date of death but death records have November. His cause of death was typhoid fever.

November 14, 1859

Margaret passes away at age 26.

She appears to have been sick for a while before passing, but no cause of death was available. This was probated in March of 1859 and she died in November.

Where to find Margaret.
